3 Touchless Techniques: How to Be a Really Good Massage Therapist
Be an Intuitive Massage Therapist
Palpitation and pressure are the foundation and expectation for a good massage therapy session. A really good massage therapist uses more than just touch. If you have ever experienced a treatment or trade from a therapist with “healing hands” then you know intuition comes into play.
Intuition is when you get out of your anatomy book and allow your hands to guide you. You treat with a knowingness, without conscious reasoning. When you are connected to your higher self you flow and move, almost like creating a beautiful song and dance, as you heal not just your client, but yourself.
The greatest gift you can give yourself and your clients is presence. To achieve being here now, practice centering yourself before you place your hands on your client. Ground through your feet, connect to your breath, and clear your mind. Let go of the external distractions around you and internal conversations within you.
This will allow you as a massage therapist to give a truly personalized and custom service. When you are present you are no longer going through the motions and giving a cookie cutter massage. Instead you connect to your clients needs and strengthen your intuition.
Lead with Compassion
Don’t just touch, but also speak with compassion. Your clients come to you with a problem or pain. They are hurting not just physically, but emotionally. Be mindful of your words, because the physical, emotional, and mental body is all one.
Allow these words from Maya Angelou to inspire you as you transition into a really good massage therapist: “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
